National Women’s League Cup Group A match

Bridgwater United WFC dutifully eased through to the next round of the National League Cup with a convincing win at Marine Academy’s base at Ivybridge Town on Sunday, writes Kerry Miller.

Following the league win on the same ground a fortnight ago, the Robins were always in control of their destiny although for an hour the home side were still in the game, although in truth keeper Jasmine Read did not have a save to make in the game, other than regulation keeper work.

The squad travelled without striker Meg Jarvis, who was ill and rested anyway and it included new signing, 17 year old Erin Williams, who has been with Aston Villa and her introduction in the second half took the heart out of Marine Academy as she was involved in the three second half goals.

Bridgy took a while to get going but on 20 minutes Emison Evans found room on the right and her squared pass from almost on the goal line was swept home with the minimum of fuss by Rosie Hill from eight yards out. A corner then caused problems for the Devon side as Beatriz Kreittis almost connected with a back heel from close in but Marine survived and with former Argyle player Kelsey Blight and Clara Pintado busy Bridgy could not become complacent.

Hill and Evans brought saves out of teenage home keeper  Emily Drinkwater Robinson before the break and on the restart the home side found some rhythm and with Bridgy dropping deep and conceding free-kicks, enjoyed a good spell without unduly bothering Read.

Blight had two free-kicks blocked or sail over before Erin Williams then came into her own and after Ellie Strippel was wide with a 20 yarder, what was a lethargic spell came to life as she walked through a static home defence to roll in the second and settle any nerves just past the half hour.

Moments later it was three as Lily Hamp was late with a challenge and referee Mark Dobrijevic gave the spot kick which Williams stuck away with ease. The Robins then made it four near the end when Aimee Kingdon set up Williams from 25 yards out and the game was done.

With results going in the right direction, progress was assured and all eyes now move to next Sunday when Royal Wooton Bassett visit the Ethan Berry Pavilion in the Women’s FA Cup, ko 2pm.
